Tennis players come and go at Coronado High School, but the one constant through the years has been Head Coach Robbin Adair. Coach Adair provided the following report on his 2005 Boys Tennis Team, which has a won-loss record of 6-6 this season.

"It’s been a busy week and we played four matches, going 2-2. This was caused by the late Easter vacation this year. Most of the schools were out the week before Easter and we were out the week after, so it was very difficult to find matches during that two-week period. Monday we beat Mira Mesa 13-5. No. 1 singles player Daniel Souza took three sets in singles, as did the doubles teams of Dan Schneider/Chris Mitchell and Javier Arozarena/Lewis Guess. Allan Hernandez took two sets and Matt Rowan took one set in singles. Newcomers Taylor Charter/Zach Oakley took one set in doubles to round out the scoring.

Tuesday we played La Jolla and lost 16-2. Our two points came from Souza in singles. Hernandez lost all three sets, but they were very close, 5-7, 4-6, and 4-6. Likewise Rowan lost all three by close scores of 3-6, 4-6, and 4-6. La Jolla had most of their big guns in doubles, so we got swept there, but Arozarena/Guess actually had a lead over Mark Chen and Adam Furman, who won the Western League a year ago, before they lost 4-6.

Thursday we went to Morley Field to play St. Augustine. The match figured to be close and it played out exactly that way. We went up early, but they came back and toward the end of the match, we were up 9-7 with two singles matches still on the courts. Souza was down 4-1, as was Rowan, and it looked like it was going to go to a count of the most games won by each team, to settle the match. Souza lost 3-6, but Rowan rallied to take it to a tie-breaker, which he won to win the match for Coronado.

Guess had a big win for us in that match, as he played his first singles match of the season and beat a really good No. 3 player for St. Augustine, after falling behind 4-1. Souza and Rowan each had two wins in singles. Hernandez/Mike Holman won two matches, as did Mitchell/Schneider, while our No. 3 doubles team of Pedro de la Fuente/Frankie Harrison won one set. They played particularly well, losing close at 4-6, and 5-7, before winning 7-5 against the Saints No. 3 team.

Friday we played Otay Ranch and lost 10-8, but we played our best match of the season. The doubles teams took six out of nine sets, with Mitchell/Schneider sweeping along with Arozarena/de la Fuente. In singles, Souza and Hernandez both won one set. Otay’s three singles players are very tough, really good players.

For the season, senior Dan Souza continues to lead us with a record of 22-8 playing No. 1 singles. Sophomore Chris Mitchell is 24-15 in doubles play and senior Dan Schneider is 23-13 in doubles.

This week the schedule returns to normal, as we travel to Scripps Ranch Tuesday to open the second round of Western League play. Then we host USDHS on Thursday."

Top-Flight Individual Performances from CHS Track Team

CHS Track Coach George Green brings us up-to-date on the CHS Boys and Girls Track Teams. "Coronado traded wins with Crawford Thursday, with the CHS Girls winning by the score of 79-33 and the Islander Boys losing 82-41.

In the Girls portion of the meet, Megan Mushovic won the 100-meter dash, the triple jump and the discus throw, and placed second in the long jump. Danielle Eckert picked up a second place in the triple jump and a third place in the long jump. Jamie Klages had two wins in the high jump and the 300-meter hurdles. Crystal Curtis won the 400-meters, placed second in the 100-meter hurdles, and finished in third in the 200-meter run. Emily Kleber won the 1,600-meter run, and placed third in the 800-meter run.

Other first place points were picked up by Ashley Houston in the 100-meter hurdles, Justine Gordon in the 800-meter run, Anneke Nelson in the 3,200-meter run, and Rebecca Waterman in the shot put. Others collecting points included: Neisha Scales with a second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 100-meter dash; Care Bach was second in the 400-meter run; and Allison Cabana finished second in the 1,600-meter run.

For the Boys, Reid McLean and Adam Munns took the top two spots in the high jump. McLean also won the 300-meter hurdles and placed third in the 100 in 11.4 seconds. Munns also won the 400. Ben Enowitz won the 1,600-meter run, followed by Michael Davies, who also placed third in the 800 behind Jake Ruzevick. David Zodrow won the discus. Also contributing were Alton Smith, who finished second in the 110-meter hurdles and third in the 300-meter hurdles; Leon Jacob, who was third in the 200-meter dash and Tim Bowman, who was third in the 110-meter hurdles.

Saturday at the Jaguar Invitational afternoon session, Ruzevick won the 1,600 in 4:30.82; McLean placed second in the 300-meter hurdles in 40.49; and Eckert finished in third place in the Division II pole vault with an effort of 8-feet, 6-inches.

As usual the Islanders dominated the high jump, with Klages setting a new meet record of 5-feet, 8.5 inches. This is the second best jump in the state this year, second only to her own best of 5-feet, 10.25 inches set at the Falcon Relays. Munns and McLean went 1-2 in the high jump, with leaps of 6-4 and 6-2 respectively.

Davies, a freshman, clocked a 5:18.57 in his heat of the 1,600-meter run. This should be fast enough to qualify him for the Frosh/Soph County Championships to be held April 30th. Zodrow placed sixth in the Division II discus throw with a toss of 121 feet, 5.5 inches and eighth in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 4 inches. Levi Lozano placed 15th in the shot put a 36-foot, 10-inch effort and he was also 13th in the discus with a throw of 102.5 feet, 5.5 inches. Conspicuously missing from the results is Sarah Player. As a precautionary measure, we kept her out of competition to rest some sore muscles.

In Coronado Middle School action, 7th grader Sallie Privett dropped down to the 800-meter urn at the Millennium Xpress Invitational at Mira Mesa High School. Her winning time of 2:25.1 was a personal record and would have won the event at the Jaguar Invitational."

Girls Lacrosse Keeps Firing Along, Owns 16-1 Record

The CHS Girls Lacrosse Team "routined" two opponents last week, defeating San Dieguito Academy 13-4 on five goals from Hannah Sebenaler and four more tallies from Marissa Nagler. They then defeated St. Margaret’s from the Bay Area by the score of 12-6.

It could have been worse, or to look at it another way, the scores could have been more lopsided. But Head Coach Jessica Battle noted that she didn’t have her first string available for either game, as Alex Vido, Sasha Vido and Jennifer Young were all injured and unable to play.

"Greer Goebels played really well in both games, along with Lindsey Negrete," said Battle. "Angela Naple also played well. This week we play Serra and Scripps Ranch. We’re really trying to gear up for La Jolla, which is Friday, April 29th. I’m getting them psyched up for the game. We know what to do. We just have to do it."

Battle also announced that junior Angela Naple has qualified to play on the Pacific Region National Team. Also Naple, her twin sister Lindsay Naple and Marissa Nagler have all qualified to represent the Pacific Region in the Cup of Nations event that will be held in conjunction with the World Cup this summer. That event will be held in one of the hot-beds of lacrosse, Annapolis, Maryland.

Boys Golf Team Closes in on Harbor League Crown

Last week we talked about the creative scheduling that found the Coronado Boys Golf Team playing their counterparts from Christian on back-to-back days. The Islanders defeated Christian in the first match at the Cottonwood Golf Course by the score of 190-218, with Stuart Harris earning medalist honors with a 34, while Sean-Ryan McCray posted an even-par round of 36.

Tuesday Coronado prevailed on their home course of Coronado Municipal, winning 195-237.

Wednesday the Islanders took on St. Augustine and were on the short end of a 174-189 score. Coronado’s Taylor Hakes fired a 2-under par 34 and didn’t earn medalist honors. In high school golf, any score under 200 (six players compete, the best five rounds are used for scoring purposes) is very good, and a team round under 190 is outstanding. Sometimes outstanding is still not good enough to win.

Thursday Coronado fielded golfers 7-12 on their squad and had more than enough to defeat Hoover 214-238. Medalist honors went to Weston Moore, who shot a 38. According to Head Coach Lee Price, a player who has been contributing to the team is freshman Michael Emerson. "He has been real steady for us. He’s been our seventh player on the varsity and he usually shoots a 40 or a 41."

Price also noted that senior Stuart Gallant, who had sustained a knee injury at the end of the soccer season, has been rehabilitating his knee and hopes to be able to resume play soon.

Defense Hurts Islander Softball Team’s Efforts

The Islander Softball Team lost two games last week. Pitching, which dominates the sport of softball perhaps even more than baseball, wasn’t the reason they fell 5-0 to La Jolla and 6-1 to Mission Bay. Sara Noceto pitched a complete game against La Jolla and didn’t give up an earned run. Kristin Barker pitched a complete game against Mission Bay and didn’t give up an earned run.

Hmmm. To quote Sherlock Holmes, as he often said to his trusted confidant Dr. John H. Watson, "Something’s amiss." Well, that would be the Islander fielding. Against the Vikings, they committed four errors. When they played Mission Bay, Coronado was charged with six more miscues.

"We had too many fundamental errors," said Head Coach Ed Shanholtz. "We seem to have one bad inning, which helps the other team out. On offense, we’re making good contact, but hitting the ball at their fielders."

Noceto and Alana Zimmer were both 1-3 at the plate against La Jolla. Noceto was 2-3 against Mission Bay, while Jessica Davis-Ricci went 1-2 against the Buccaneers.

This week the Islanders host Escondido Charter at 4 pm Monday at Green Field. They travel to Point Loma Thursday for a 3 pm Western League contest.

Baseball Squad Loses Two Tough Games

Normally when you lose a game 17-3, it’s not described as "winnable." Last week in their Western League game against University City, Coronado had a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. At that point, the Islanders lost control of the situation, allowing 11 runs to the Centurions in the bottom half of the inning. To add another level of zaniness, Head Coach Sam Ceci protested the game over a play that occurred in the second inning. "The play was totally off the wall. We were winning 1-0 at that point. There is a chance that the game might be replayed, but I’m not holding my breath."

The surprise star of the week was freshman right-handed hurler Kyle Pokorny, called up from the JV squad, who started for Coronado against USDHS Thursday. "We were hoping to get three or four innings from Kyle," said Ceci. "And he went five and two-thirds and gave us a great outing. He did a great job, and he was keeping them off balance. He throws a nice curveball and has a decent fastball and he’s able to spot it. He has a good mound presence and knows how to pitch. He’s a product of the Coronado Little League program. He’ll be a big part of our future."

Pokorny also doubles as the JV shortstop and to begin the week, he will fill that role. "We’ll get his some at-bats early in the week," Ceci said. "Then we’ll bring him up to pitch." In the three varsity games Pokorny has pitched this year, he has thrown 10.2 innings, yielded only two extra base hits, and has a fine earned run average of 3.94.

Despite Pokorny’s strong mound outing, Coronado lost to the Dons 5-4. "It was one of those games that weren’t as bad as they seem. We had a number of positives. We battled and did a lot of things right. The fact is that we were right there. We had them on the ropes and didn’t get it done. In the bottom of the seventh, we had the tying run on third with one out and we couldn’t get the run home."

Injuries are requiring Ceci and his staff to get creative with their lineup. Catcher Max Weinfurtner developed a sore arm, causing shortstop Blake Spitzer to go behind the plate. This week the Islanders have three games on the schedule. They travel to La Jolla Tuesday, and host Mission Bay Thursday, with both games scheduled for 3:30pm. They then host Clairemont Saturday at 1:30 pm.

Boys Volleyball Swings Into Action This Week

The spring break scheduling challenges hit Coronado’s Boys Volleyball Team particularly hard, as they haven’t had a match in two weeks. When asked about his team, Head Coach Phil Trotter said, "They’re doing fine. We’ve had a long period of not playing (a game), but actually we’re definitely doing better, especially the freshmen."

Trotter noted the development of outside hitter Spencer Boyd and back row specialist Dan Ross, of whom Trotter said, "He’s probably developed into our best back row player."

This week the Islanders play at Bishop’s Wednesday and then play in the Valhalla Tournament over the weekend. "They are anxious to have an opponent," said Trotter of his team. "We’re going to have some rust, but we’re getting better."

Nado Girls Soccer Team Reaches Round of 32 in State Cup

Joe Navratil brings us news from the Coronado Girls Under 15 Soccer Team and their trip through State Cup play. "After winning all three games the previous week by the scores of 2-0, 1-0, and 1-0, the team fell in the Round of 32 to a tough Chino Hills team 3-0 in the Cal South State Soccer Cup in San Bernardino. The team is coached by Rene Clavijo.

The first three games were played without any substitutes. The girls played tight defense, anchored by stopper Rosie Harris and goalie Dayna Winter-Nolte. Shannon Lindsay, Lauren Ribant and Jessica Lindquist contributed to the defensive effort. Goals were scored by forwards Jenny Bolander and Sarah Connors. The team featured midfielders Becka Runyon, Colleen Burns, Jordan Navratil and Annalorena Baron.

"I’m proud of all of them," said Coach Clavijo. "The girls played with a lot of heart and hustle.

For the Round of 32, Brooke Clifford and Katie Culora joined the team, but their contribution wasn’t enough to keep the streak going for Coronado in the single elimination round.

Tryouts for the fall team will be held at Coronado Cays Park May 4 from 5-7 pm and May 7 from 1-3 pm. For more information, please call 437-1562 or visit the club’s website at www.nadosoccer.net.
