When you’re as talented as The Coronado Girls Lacrosse Team is this season, you can downshift your intensity a gear and still defeat Santana 10-3 early in the week and then dominate Carlsbad by the score of 14-2 Saturday.
Saturday’s contest against the Lancers provided an interesting scoring pattern as Coronado scored the game’s first five goals, Carlsbad scored twice and Coronado finished off the game with a run of nine straight tallies. Jessica Schelkun, Lindsay Negrete and Caitlin Kennedy all scored three goals each, with Marissa Nagler and Hope Alexander both scoring twice and Jennifer Young adding a solo goal.
Freshman Hannah Sebenaler led the Islander attack against Santana with three goals.
The scoring was so intense at the outset of the Carlsbad game that Your Natterer missed two Coronado goals while providing the Lancer JV head coach with directions to a local restaurant. Fortunately long-time lacrosse parent Frank Goebels was able to provide an accurate scoring summary.
"Hope Alexander did well in the Carlsbad game and in the Santana game Monday," said Coronado Girls Lacrosse Head Coach Jessica Battle. "Amanda Purvis played well at the third home position and scored a couple of goals against Santana."
Coronado plays Patrick Henry on the road Monday evening and will enter Thursday’s seeding meeting with "pretty much guaranteed the first seed," according to Battle. Currently the team is 19-0 in season and 24-1 overall.
If that form holds, Coronado will receive a first round by on Saturday, and will host a second round playoff game on Tuesday May 17 against a team ranked No. 8 or below. If they win, they will host a semi-final game Thursday against one of the county’s powerhouse teams, likely to be Poway, La Jolla, La Costa Canyon or Torrey Pines. The Finals will be held May 21 at Westview High School.
Boys Lacrosse Posts 2-0 Record Last Week
The CHS Boys Lacrosse Team finished their regular season on a strong note, defeating University City 18-0 earlier last week and then knocking off USDHS Saturday 6-4. Against the Dons, Will Purvis and Kelcey Fisher both scored twice, with solo goals made by Alex Woolf and Geoff Worley.
Head Coach Alex Cade provided insight into the week’s games. "University City is a new program. They have great kids, a great coach, and they are a real pleasure to play. As a coach, it was great to see the sportsmanship in that game. Against USDHS, we were worn down a little bit from practice that week. The guys played tired, but they played pretty well."
The Boys Lacrosse seeding meeting is Wednesday and Cade still thinks the Islanders will emerge with a seed in the 4-6 range. "We will host a first round game, but it’s likely that the second round game won’t be at home. It will be great to get everyone out there for the home game. It will be an interesting seeding meeting. A total of 16 teams will make the playoffs, with no first round byes."

Track and Field News
CHS and CMS Head Track and Field Coach George Green provides a report on both the Islanders and the Pelicans from last week’s action. "The Islander Track and Field Team traded wins with the Clairemont Chieftains in our final dual meet of the season. The Clairemont Boys completed an undefeated season, winning by the score of 65-53 for the Harbor League championship. The Girls meet was close, with Coronado winning by one point, 54-53.
Jake Ruzevick won all three distance runs with times of 4:44 for the 1,600-meter run, 2:06.9 for the 800-meter run, and the winning time of 10:55.4 for the 3,200-meter run. Kacey Zapatka placed second and third in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs respectively with times of 5:02.6 and 11:06.3. Adam Munns and Reid McLean went 1-2 in the high jump with leaps of 6-4 and 6-2, in that order. Munns also won the 400-meter run in 53.9 seconds and McLean won the 300-meter hurdles in 41.2.
The Islanders were pretty much shut out of the sprints with the exception of Stephen Knuth, who placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.7. The throwers had a good day, winning both the shot put and discus throws. Levi Lozano’s effort of 41 feet in the shot put was his personal best, while David Zodrow also set a personal best in the discus with a throw of 132 feet, 4 inches.
It should come as no surprise that state leader Jamie Klages won the high jump, this time with a jump of 5-feet, 5.5 inches. Klages still leads the state rankings in the event with her mark of 5-feet, 10.25 inches. Sarah Player placed second with a jump of 5-feet even. Player also won the 300-meter hurdles in 48.6 and placed second in the 200 in 27.5, followed by Crystal Curtis in third, also with a time of 27.5. Curtis placed second in the 400. Ashley Houston won both the 100 hurdles and the long jump. Christian Grant and Gabriella Cary went 1-2 in the 100 in times of 14.1 and 14.2, while Danielle Eckert placed third in the long jump. Rebecca Waterman placed third in the shot put with a toss of 25 feet, 10 inches.
Saturday at the San Diego County Middle School Championships at Westview High School, Sallie Privett set 7th grade County records in both the 800 and 1,600 meter runs, with times of 2:30.8 and 5:27. Also winning their heats were Maria Stacy in the 6th grade girls division of the 400-meter run with a time of 72.8; Lizzy Stone in the 7th grade girls 100 in 13.7; and Adrianna Davies in the 7th grade girls 400 in 71.3. Fast performances were also turned in by Alexandria Flores in the 8th grade girls 400 (67.1), and David Grimes who placed second in both the 800 and 1,600 meter runs, the latter in a personal best time of 5:12.9.

Boys Volleyball Team’s Two Wins Sets Up Harbor League Showdown
Showing they have resiliency, the CHS Boys Volleyball Team won both of their Harbor League games last week, as they defeated Crawford 25-4, 25-19, and 25-16. Since volleyball at all levels now employs the point-per-play scoring system, the above listed scores may look close, but they really weren’t.
In the first game, Spencer Boyd served for 16 straight points, which shows remarkable consistency for a prep player. Another interesting fact is that the Colts’ coach didn’t call timeout during Boyd’s serving skein. Of the 75 points scored by the Islanders during the match, Boyd served for 21 of the team’s points, helping to account for 28 percent of the Islander offense.
Game two found senior setter Jed Considine serving for a total of nine points on two different rotations, employing a potent jump serve in the process. Considine, who was a two-way lineman and captain of the Islander football team, showed his versatility on the court, repeatedly setting up his teammates and running the Islander’s offense.
For those of you who go back to the glory days of U.S. Olympic Volleyball, Considine has developed a Dusty Dvorak-like hook kill shot that kept Crawford off balance.
Trotter employed all of the available members of the Islanderteam in the victory, including Anthony Ott, Dan Ross, Justin Hardy, Jonathan Smith, and Alan Cooper.
Later in the week, the Islanders played what Head Coach Phil Trotter termed, "the team’s best played match of the year," which was a 25-12, 19-25, 25-17, 25-13 victory over Madison High School. Trotter noted that Considine continued his fine play to the Islanders road win over the War Hawks. "Jed played great against Madison. He played within himself, was a good leader, and was clearly the best player on the court. It was more satisfying than any other game we have played this year because we played as a team. Our senior middle Brady Penn played his best match of the year."
In the first round of Harbor League play, the Islanders lost a home match to Clairemont and the league finale is at Clairemont Wednesday. A victory would earn the Islanders a Co-Harbor League title.
According to Trotter, the final week of play will also determine whether Coronado will progress to the CIF Division IV playoffs. "I could get us a 7 or 8 seed, which would mean playing Francis Parker, which is probably the best team in the nation. Unless we’re playing well, I don’t want to practice for another week just to have a showing. If we finish strong, I think it would be nice to play one more match."
CHS Swimming Team Heads to Conference Meet
Head Swim Coach Dave Throop knows that when his team hits the pool for the City Conference meet this week, that his team is not as talented as in past years. But on the other hand, several individuals will likely do well as they and the team prepares for the CIF Swimming and Diving meet on the horizon.
"We have a handful of guys who are doing pretty well, including seniors Dallas Chase, Drew Ratcliffe and Ryan Cooper. Dallas will swim the sprint freestyles, Drew swims the middle distance freestyle events and Ryan Cooper swims the breaststroke. Our most versatile guy is junior Preston Lujan. Between him and Sean Castillo we have two thoroughbreds. Preston swims the 50 and 100 free, while Castillo swims the 200 individual medley. Actually the whole junior class is doing well."
The girls’ squad is preparing for the same meet schedule and they have their standouts as well, according to Throop. "The girls are wonderful to work with. They’re a great group. We have a few seniors, including Elizabeth Hopkins, who is a middle distance freestyle specialist. Megan Braun, a JV swimmer a year ago is continuing to lead by example with her great work ethic. She is swimming sprint freestyle races this year.
Brooke Clark is swimming the 100 breaststroke and our top breaststroker is Katherine McGuire. We’re looking for her to final in the 100 breast. She probably has the best odds to finish well in the CIF meet, based on times and results in our meets to this point.
Sophomore Molly Patrick is one of our best athletes, boy or girl. She is a sprint freestyle specialist, and the 50 and the 100 are her focus for the next two weeks. Freshman Carly Hoshko has competed in distance sprints and stroke events this year. We’ve moved her all over the map. She has the most CIF qualifying times. She’ll swim the 100 and 200 free in the city meet. Alana Burgess is working hard and has moved up to the varsity competition level. There aren’t many people who work as hard as Alana and Megan Braun."
Throop expects La Jolla to be among the leaders in the City Conference meet, but added, "Our kids have been in pressure environments and performed well. We have the numbers and we have worked harder than some of the more talented groups."
Honors, Awards and Other Items
CHS Senior Jamie Klages, who is one of the best prep soccer goalies in the nation, has been invited to attend the upcoming Women’s Under 20 U.S. National Team training camp to be held at the Home Depot Center in Carson. According to CHS Head Girls Soccer Coach Miles Ramirez, the Under 20 team is one step from the full Senior National Team that competes in the World Cup.
Klages, who currently is the state-wide leader in the high jump in track and field, will attend the University of Nebraska on a soccer scholarship in the fall.
Congratulations to former Islander tennis player Trystan Flannigan (CHS ’03), who is currently attending Mesa College. She and her doubles partner were recently named Junior College All-Americans.
The 9th Annual Prom Fashion Show will be held Friday, May 20 at 6 pm at Village Hall in Coronado. Tickets, which will be available at the door, cost $12 for adults and $6 for children. There will also be an art auction associated with the event, and all purchases are by cash only.

CHS Baseball Team Very Much Alive in CIF Division III Playoff Race
Last week the highs and lows of the CHS Baseball season continued, as the Islanders defeated La Jolla 8-1, lost to University City 4-3 and then defeated USDHS 4-1.
There are really two different races running concurrently for the Islanders, both of which involve Western League teams. First is the Western League race itself, currently being won by Mission Bay, which is undefeated in league play. By winning two of their Western League games last week, the Islanders improved to 4-5 in the league and 16-10 overall. Coronado’s wins moved them ahead of USDHS, Point Loma and La Jolla. The Islanders are now exactly in the middle of the seven-team Western League race.
The more important issue is the CIF Division III playoffs, which will feature virtually everyone in the Western League except University City, assigned to Division II in the playoffs. As Head Coach Sam Ceci pointed out, "The loss to University City hurts us in the Western League, but not in the playoff picture. Our mission was to beat everybody we are vying with for a playoff spot, which includes La Jolla and USDHS."
Specifically in the La Jolla game, sophomore Danny Cepin started the game on the mound for Coronado and went four innings, allowing just one run, to earn the victory. The game was unique in that all eight Coronado runs occurred in the second inning after two outs were recorded, with the Islanders sending a total of 14 hitters to the plate. Six of the eight Islander runs were earned.
For the game, Mike Denson had two RBIs and contributed a single, a double and a walk; Josh Okerman added a single and a double in two trips to the plate and an RBI; while Kyle Pokorny was 2-3 also with a single and a double.
According to Ceci, Pokorny pitched well enough to win the University City game, but the Islanders couldn’t get it done at the plate. David West contributed three of the Islanders six hits.
Kevin Couture earned a complete game victory over USDHS. Jimmy Gersonde supplied a two-RBI double. Ryan Nunn and Max Weinfurtner both put down safety squeeze bunts, which accounted for the four Islander runs.
This week the Islanders play at Mission Bay Tuesday and then play at Point Loma on Thursday.
Boys Tennis Splits Two Matches
Boys Tennis Head Coach Robbin Adair provides the update for his team. "Tuesday we hosted St. Augustine and beat them 11-7. Daniel Souza played particularly well, winning three sets by the scores of 6-0, 6-0, and 6-1. Allan Hernandez and Matt Rowan each won one to give us a 5-4 win in singles.
Over in doubles, all three doubles teams took two out of three matches. Lewis Guess/Dan Schneider went 2-6, 6-0, 6-4, while Mike Holman/Chris Mitchell went 0-6, 6-2, and 6-1. Javier Arozarena/Pedro de la Fuente went 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to give us a 6-3 win in doubles.
Wednesday we traveled to La Jolla to make up a rained-out match from Thursday of last week. They beat us 18-0, but it was kind of a back-handed compliment. Their coach Mike Brown decided to leave all of his best players in the lineup. He had seen our scores, and the improvement we have been making in the second round, and wanted to take no chances.
Thursday night the upcoming CIF Team Tournament was seeded. Once again all six teams in the Western League are within the Top 8 in the various divisions. We are the only league in the county where all the teams make the playoffs. La Jolla is seeded No. 1 in Division II and University City is No. 5 in Division II. In Division I Scripps Ranch is No. 6. In Division III USDHS is No. 3, Coronado is No. 7, and St. Augustine is No. 8.
We open play Tuesday at the Glorietta Tennis Center playing the No. 10 seed Santa Fe Christian."
Seven CHS Golfers Qualify for the Postseason
Tuesday the CHS Golf Team will play in the CIF Team and Individual Playoffs at Warner Springs. As the winner of the Harbor League with a perfect 10-0 record, Coronado sends team members Taylor Hakes, Stewart Harris, Stuart Gallant, Sean-Ryan McCray, Bryan Reed and Nick Finley to compete in the team tournament. Also, freshman Michael Emerson qualified as one of the next 24 best players in Division II and will play as an individual.
After the first round of play, the next round is played May 17 at Singing Hills Country Club. The Top 10 Teams, plus the Top 28 players (not already included by being a member of one of the qualifying teams) and ties advance to this level of play.
According to Head Coach Dr. Lee Price, Yale University-bound Hakes is the team’s scoring leader. "Taylor made it to Wednesday in match play, winning two rounds. He lost by one shot on the last hole in match play. Taylor is playing very well right now and he’s a very good golfer. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t make it to the finals as an individual. He shot even par at Torrey Pines South this year and he shot a 33 (for nine holes) at Torrey North. He shot a 34 at Cottonwood and had a couple of 35’s at Coronado Municipal. I think Stewart Harris can do really well. He and Taylor should probably go on."
Girls Softball Team Falls Twice in Western League
Tuesday Coronado lost to University City 6-3 and Thursday they lost to La Jolla 9-0, but an outside hope still flickers for a playoff berth. University City is considered to be the stronger opponent of the two, but the Islanders played the Centurions well, being credited with five hits. "We only had two errors against University City," said Head Coach Ed Shanholtz. "Kristin Barker was 2-4, Farrell Pompa was 1-2, and Sara Noceto was 1-3 with a 2-RBI triple. Jessica Davis-Ricci was 2-3 at the plate and had four putouts in right field."
The La Jolla game was another matter, as the Vikings didn’t yield a hit to Coronado until the fifth inning. The Islanders added two more in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the rally was short-lived. "We actually started hitting the ball at the end," said Shanholtz. "But it was a little bit too late."
One game separates the Western League leaders Clairemont, USDHS and University City. This week the Islanders have a make-up game Monday at USDHS, while Tuesday they host Mission Bay at 3 pm. A home game Tuesday against Point Loma will conclude the regular season.
Shanholtz thinks his club might make the playoffs. "I’m going to try and get us in. The seeding meeting is May 19th. If we run the table or win two of these final three games, we might make it. We might have a chance based on our tournament results." A total of 12 teams qualify for the Division III playoffs.
