22 Dec 2005 Issue #52
Many great accomplishments were achieved on the playing fields and courts by Coronado High School athletes in 2005. Following are the year’s athletic highlights, categorized by season for your enjoyment.
Winter 2005
The Coronado sports year launched successfully with The Girls Soccer Team going undefeated in their first 21 games of the season at 19-0-2. Included in that run was a 6-0-1 record in the month of January, during which they did not yield a goal. The 2004-05 Islanders were a talented and deep team that included CIF Division III Player of the Year Jamie Klages and fellow CIF Division III First Team members Ashley Copp and Sasha Vido. Led by veteran Head Coach Miles Ramirez, Coronado earned the No. 2 seed in the Division III playoffs.
Paced by a spectacular leaping save by Klages in the semi-final game against Valhalla, the Islanders earned a slot in the finals against long-time rival University of San Diego High School (now Cathedral Catholic). After of 110 minutes of championship competition concluded in a 1-1 tie, the Islanders and Dons were declared Co-champions.
Including the playoffs, Coronado finished with a mark of 25-3-4. When they were firing on all cylinders, the Girls Soccer Team was a spectacular team to watch in action.
The CHS Boys Soccer Team mounted one of their best campaigns in school history, going undefeated in the Harbor League. The Islanders had a memorable streak during the season, where they shut out six consecutive opponents. The 2004-05 season also marked the first time that Coronado defeated conference rivals Hoover, Crawford and Clairemont on the road, all in the same year.
Coronado earned the No. 2 seed in the Division III playoffs, but lost their first game in the championship series. Stuart Gallant was named Harbor League MVP; the first time the honor was ever accorded to an Islander male soccer player. Head Coach Brian Hiatt-Aleu also named Gallant the Islander MVP.
Coronado’s Girls Water Polo Team advanced to the CIF Division II Finals, before losing to Bishop’s 11-9. The Knights and the Islanders have now played each other in the finals five times, with Coronado holding a 3-2 edge in titles won. The Islanders completed their season under the direction of Head Coach Dave Throop with a 21-10 record. Megan Braun earned Team MVP honors.
Co-MVPs Alex Fairman and Adam Munns helped lead The Coronado Boys Basketball Team to a 17-9 record. The season concluded with the Islanders earning a No. 6 seed in the Division IV playoffs, where they defeated Army-Navy 54-32 in the first round. They then concluded their season with a 76-52 loss at Francis Parker. Head Coach Sandy Dillon fielded a competitive team that played well together.
Another fine coaching job was turned in by Toler Goodwin, head coach of The Girls Basketball Team. Although they finished the season with a 10-16 record and didn’t qualify for the playoffs, the Girls improved more during their season than any CHS team all year. Team MVP was guard Brooke Becky.
Spring 2005
Several outstanding performances dotted the spring sports schedule, with The CHS Girls Lacrosse Team being among the best. Senior All-American Julia Schelkun and fellow All-CIF First Team selection Angela Naple helped lead the team to the CIF Finals against La Costa Canyon. The Islanders lost to the Mavericks in the championship game 10-4, but posted a 21-2 record for the season. Coronado won the City Conference title defeating La Jolla 10-8 in the finals. The squad’s head coach was Jessica Battle.
The Boys Lacrosse team also featured an All-American in Kevin Chenoweth. The senior goalie was also named to the All-CIF First Team. The Islanders season featured a 17-4 record and a No. 4 seed in the CIF Playoffs. After defeating Westview 11-7 in the first round, the Islanders fell to Poway 11-4 in the quarterfinals. Alex Cade guided the team to its fine record.
From a historical perspective, The Boys Baseball Team’s post season run was unprecedented. For the first time in the 85-year history of Coronado High School, the baseball team, guided by Head Coach Sam Ceci, reached the CIF Finals in the sport. Finishing with a very respectable 18-11 record during the regular season, the Islanders received the No. 10 seed in a playoff field of 12 teams. With that seed, all of their games in the playoffs were played on the road.
The Islanders defeated San Marcos 11-8, St. Augustine 7-4, and Mission Bay 3-2 before losing to Mission Bay 3-2 in nine innings in the double-elimination playoff format. Their 2-0 shutout of Mission Bay the third time they played in the playoffs sent the Islanders to the CIF Finals, where they lost to USDHS 12-7.
During the season, Kevin Couture pitched a no-hit, no-run, 5-0 victory against Point Loma. Couture was named ‘Gamer of the Year,’ with David West and Blake Spitzer sharing Team MVP honors. Couture was accorded Division III First Team recognition.
The Boys Golf Team won the Harbor League with a perfect 10-0 record under Dr. Lee Price. Taylor Hakes, Stewart Harris and Stuart Gallant all advanced to the second round of the CIF Playoffs.
The biggest surprise in the CIF Playoffs was The Boys Swimming Team, which finished in third place in the City Conference meet, then and raced their way to a CIF Division II second place finish a week later. The outstanding swimmer in the meet from a Coronado perspective was Dallas Chase, who won the 100-yard freestyle, finished second in the 50-free. Swim Team Head Coach Dave Throop named Preston Lujan the Team MVP. On The Girls Swim Team, the Co-MVPs were Molly Patrick and Kaitlyn Gillingham.
Other Team MVPs included: Daniel Souza in Boys Tennis, Jed Considine in Boys Volleyball, and Co-MVPs were announced in Softball, with the awards going to Farrell Pompa and Sara Noceto.
Some of the best individual performances were saved for the Boys and Girls Track and Field Team. Jamie Klages tied the CIF San Diego Section girls’ high jump mark with a leap of 5-feet, 10 inches in April. Sarah Player set the Coronado High School mark in the 300-meter hurdles with a run of 47.1 seconds and then later high jumped 5-feet, 5 inches.
Klages also earned the distinction of being named to the Women’s Under 20 U.S. National Soccer Team as a goalie.
Klages went on to win the CIF Section high jump title for all divisions. She and senior high jumper Adam Munns both qualified to go to the state meet. Munns and fellow seniors Reid McLean and Jake Ruzevick were named by Head Coach George Green as Team MVPs. Klages earned the distinction for the girls’ squad.
Klages earned 10 athletic letters in high school (two in volleyball; four each in soccer and track and field), and was named The San Diego Union-Tribune Female Athlete of the Year.
On a sad note, former CHS basketball player and track athlete Adam Bacon (CHS ’02) lost his life in a car accident in June. Bacon earned a 4.1 GPA at Coronado and was a leader on the Loyola Marymount Men’s Cross Country Team prior to his passing.
Fall 2005
The Boys Water Polo Team posted a strong result in 2005, compiling a 22-9 overall record and a second place finish to The Bishop’s School in the CIF Division II Finals. This marked the 13th consecutive season that the Islanders have reached the CIF Finals.
One of the highlights of the season was the team’s sixth place finish in the prestigious NorCal Tournament held annually in San Jose. The event serves as the unofficial state championship. The Islanders defeated Clovis West, lost to eventual NorCal champion Long Beach Wilson, defeated Bellarmine Prep and lost to El Toro in the tourney. Head Coach Randy Burgess named Sean Castillo as the Team’s MVP.
The Varsity Football Team finished the season with a 7-4 record and received one of the finest individual performances of the fall season from Team MVP Kelcey Fisher. The senior triple threat at running back, place kicker and defensive back, rushed for 193 yards on 10 carries and scored three touchdowns in the first half against University City.
Bud Mayfield’s Islander team qualified for the playoffs, where they lost to eventual Division IV champion Valley Center 55-6 in the first round. The Jaguars were the defending Division III champs. Coronado’s Most Valuable Back was David Loving and the Most Valuable Lineman was Kyle McArthur.
The Girls Golf Team was paced to their 11-5 record by junior Alexcie Sanchez, who was the only member of the squad who qualified for CIF individual play.
Phil Trotter led The Girls Volleyball Team to the playoffs and coached his team to the most exciting victory of the fall playoff season, a 25-18, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-12 victory over Horizon. The gym was rocking and the home-standing Islanders channeled the crowd’s energy to secure the victory.
In the next round, Team MVP Megan Mushovic and her teammates ran into the eventual state Division IV Champion Francis Parker and were eliminated by the scores of 25-6, 25-10 and 25-13. Coronado posted a 14-12 record for the year, playing in the competitive Eastern League.
The Girls Tennis Team, under the direction of Head Coach Robbin Adair, continued to compete in the brutal Western League again this year. Adair named Nicole Aponte as Team MVP this season.
The CHS Boys Cross Country Team won the Central League team title and performed well in the Central League individual competition. Ben Enowitz finished in second place in the individual race, and earned All-League honors. He was joined on the Central League First Team by Michael Davies and David Grimes. Enowitz also qualified for the California state cross country competition.
The Girls Cross Country Team finished in second place in the Central League, missing the league crown by a single point in a dual meet loss. Karolin Ivarsson and Sheila Braun earned All-Central League First Team Honors for their efforts. Head Cross Country Coach George Green named Enowitz and Ivarsson as the MVPs of their respective teams.
